Ever read a Scripture promise and don’t admit that you aren’t really all that excited about it? I do. (Shock!) I’m thinking about the verse that says He “has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 1: 3) When I first read that years ago, I thought, “I don’t want spiritual blessings. I want REAL blessings!”
I wanted a horse, a boyfriend, and to look good in a bikini. As I got a little older, I wanted a car, a husband, and to look good in shorts. A few years later, I wanted a house, a baby and to be able to fit into my jeans. And so it went…
Now years later, I look back and most of those “REAL” blessings are gone (except the baby who is really BIG now). They were good at the time, but only temporary. Hmmm. They are no longer “real.”
Perhaps that is why the spiritual blessings are to be valued. Sought after. Cherished! Because only what is permanent is ultimately real.
Only what is permanent is ultimately real.
Some of those “spiritual blessings” offered in Ephesians 1 are:
*Forgiveness of sins. (Permanent. REAL.)
*Accepted in the Beloved. (Permanent. REAL.)
*Adoption as sons of God. (Permanent. REAL.)
*Obtained an inheritance. (Permanent. REAL.)
*Sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. (Permanent. REAL.)
Ultimately, all blessings come from God. And I am truly grateful for even those that have not lasted. But the best ones are those that are permanent…because they are the only REAL blessings. I guess that is because God is permanent. And He is REAL. Now I am excited!
