Have you ever dreamed of doing something really great for God? To impact many lives, and make a difference in this world? Just the awesomeness of knowing your life really mattered! And you secretly wish, “If only I had a servant who could do all the menial stuff, then I could be free to do the really important things for God.”
I confess that I’ve had it upside down all this time! I assumed that bigger is always better, and our goal is always MORE. (Oops.)
I did a double take listening again to what Jesus said about the day we stand before Him. The master entrusted each person with something different, along with a unique job to do. Then when He came back, the one who did what He told him to do received a warm, joyful welcome! “Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master!” (NASB)
Serving the Lord can be challenging and also exciting. But we have to guard against equating the thrill of the work with its true value. Or to assume numbers here have parallel significance in Heaven. That ONE person who needs us today is far more important than we realize! And our faithfulness in doing those seemingly menial tasks that consume our days IS pleasing to the Lord.
Rather than “How MUCH am I doing for God?” perhaps we should be asking ourselves:
How am I doing with the people God has put in my life and my care, and the responsibilities He has entrusted to me?
Here’s what I am trying to remember:
- God doesn’t need me to do stuff for Him; He wants to work through me!
- God doesn’t tell us to do a LOT and to do it perfectly; He tells us to be faithful with what He has given us to do.
- When we seek the Lord and His will with all our heart, He will give us what we need when we need it, to do what He wants when He wants.
So throughout the day whenever we catch ourselves grumbling, or dreaming about wishing we could one day do something really important for God, ask Him to help us be “FAITHFUL with a few.” Hard to imagine anything more rewarding than to hear my Master say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Lord, please help me be faithful in the few things You have for me today, and keep my eyes on the joy that awaits!
