Recently I messaged a dear friend who, for as long as I’ve known her, has struggled with health and mobility, and I never heard one word of complaint. (She would have heard a few words from me if the roles were reversed!) 😉 After asking her how she was, she replied:
“I love the old songs: ‘Show me Your way, I want to walk with You. Show me Your way, I put my hope in You. The cry of my heart is to love You more, to walk with the touch of Your hand. Show me this day, show me Your way.’ I just LOVE THIS SONG!” *
Yesterday a massive stroke suddenly took her life. The cry of her heart at last is totally and eternally fulfilled. Donna now has forever to love and walk with the Lord, and to feel His loving touch.
In the wake of death’s sting, I paused to reflect:
What is the cry of MY heart?
Most of my life it has been “Lord fix this!” “Heal this!” “Give me this!” Can I honestly say my very deepest longing is just to know Him? Love Him? Walk with Him?
There is nothing wrong with asking for what we want. Jesus spoke often of coming to the Father for what we need, and we are encouraged all through scripture to pray. But if that is as far as we go, are we missing the real treasure?
Imagine for a minute that God does answer all your prayers and gives you everything you ask. A hundred years from now will it matter?
And now imagine if all you asked for was to know Him and love Him and walk with Him? If He Himself was the deepest cry of your heart? A hundred years from now that will have more value than anything we could ever ask or think! And the blessings start here and now.
This is where I’d like to give you a list of 3 things to do to have Jesus be the deepest cry of your heart. But I can’t. It’s not about a to-do list. All I can say is I’m pretty sure it starts with choosing Him…over and over. And responding to His love messages to us. Every moment of every day.
I encourage you to listen to the song. I know now why Donna loved it so much…because she loved her SAVIOR!
