I’ve always had and loved dogs, and they love me. Shared playful moments, cuddles, beds and even a few fleas. I delight in the memories, including our adorable basset who flunked obedience training, the regal Great Dane who cowered when the kitten raised its paw, and the faithful golden retriever who brought home a pair of giant boxer shorts belonging to the neighbor (we didn’t return them). 🙂
Now in this season of life, I’m dogless by choice. As much as I miss having a dog of my own, it hasn’t stopped me from still enjoying them every day!
Over the years my morning neighborhood walks have transformed me into a sort of dog whisperer. (Cats, on the other hand, are more of a hit and miss challenge.) But dogs? When they see me coming, they start wigglin’ and waggin’!
Recently I started carrying dog treats, which have received rave rover reviews. And 100% repeat business! I even got one dog to sit, much to the surprise of his owner. “He can sit???” And to be polite, I always offer one to the people too, but no takers yet. 🙂
I also cherish the human interaction – lots of laughs, new acquaintances and budding friendships. And perhaps even more touching are those who feel safe enough to bare their hearts. So many people and those they love are hurting. How precious is the privilege of connecting and caring. Sometimes even wrapped up in a hug, and a promise to hold them in my heart and prayers. ♥
The other beautiful blessing born from all this is an ongoing neighborhood support and encouragement group. And of course, most of them have dogs!
What I’ve been discovering in this season of life is two-fold:
1) When we feel something missing in our lives, open our hearts to the blessings we do have.
2) And when we give love and joy, not only does it spread to and through others, but it always comes back around to warm our own hearts more than we ever imagined. ♥
“We love because He first loved us.” ♥
