What does God have to do to get our attention? With an unprecedented plethora of bizarre things going on lately, when people cry out for help, so many times God answers. Yet how do people typically respond? Here’s what happened to me:
Our good friends have farmland in Illinois, and like many they’re dependent on the income from the crops. Two weeks ago I got a desperate email from them about the freak flash drought, and fear of losing the whole crop. I told them we’d pray fervently, and we looked forward to thanking God when the rain came.
Yesterday they wrote and told me it had rained! I responded with “Good news! Thank the Lord!” 🙂 From them: “Mother Nature has smiled on us.” Wow…really?
And then, “We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the good weather will continue.”
Wow. Really?
Fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc.? Yikes! We humans have a stubborn streak that sucks us mercilessly toward anything we can do to avoid acknowledging Him as almighty Creator, and even more as our loving Savior.
Personally, my fingers are short and not in optimal shape, so I’m outta luck if I have to depend on them. Much less wood!
At this moment all I can say is God is amazingly gracious and patient to put up with us and our unbelief! And lest I be proud myself, I am thankful He waited patiently for ME to open my heart to Him.
Pretty sure God has done a LOT to get our attention. And in His goodness, He permits reminders that we are not as in control as we’d like to think we are. I’m heartsick that so many reject Him and His amazing invitation to have a personal relationship with us through Jesus Christ His Son.
They just don’t want Him. Period.
Rain or shine. Feast or famine.
Each of us has a choice: either we choose God and His way of grace and peace and forgiveness and life, or we reject Him and eventually lose everything.
I pray every day that people everywhere will turn their hearts toward God. Rain or shine. Feast or famine. He waits with open arms. At least for a while longer.
