It’s always exciting to encounter a little drama on my routine morning walks. But this time was different. Up ahead I saw the flashing emergency lights of fire trucks and squad cars that had just arrived in front of an ordinary house I’ve walked by hundreds of times. It was a challenge to keep walking past the commotion, yet try to find out what was going on without appearing to be a nosey thrill-seeker.
The police and firefighters immediately began hacking through the front door with an ax. As tempting as it was to stay and watch, I kept on.
And just my luck, one of the neighbors stepped outside to look, coffee mug in hand. “What’s going on?” I inquired. Sadly, he informed me that something probably happened during the night to the older lady who lived there alone.
“Mortality comes a-knockin,” he mused.
“Yes, it does. And usually it is not in our plans for the day. What would we do without the Lord for our hope?” I reflected.
So I continued on home, my typical light-hearted steps a bit heavier, saddened that all of us lose loved ones – and ourselves eventually – to mortality.
What do people who don’t know the Lord hold on to for hope? Or is it just easier to say something such as “Mortality Comes A-Knockin’,” and go on with the day?
I am so thankful that Jesus (whose name means “Jehovah is salvation”) has paid the way for ALL of us to FREELY come Home with Him when our date arrives. To exchange our mortality for His gift of immortality! And all He requires is for us to choose to receive His forgiveness through Jesus His Son. No fancy prayers or religious rituals…just reaching out in faith to Him for His salvation.
When Jesus comes for me, I hope my loved ones and neighbors will be able to say, “Jesus came a-knockin’, and she was ready.”
For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. ~John 3:16
