Early in life many of us discovered what we really need is that thing on TV, or what our friend got for Christmas. When our parents said “No,” we argued, “But I really need that!” (Never worked for me!) 😄
Those urgent needs gradually morphed into cool cars, hairstyles, athletic prowess, lucrative jobs, pets, a fit body, nice home, fulfilling relationships, vacation, etc. And the list keeps going!
The things we thought we desperately needed at the time may have been good things. Having needs and wants are normal.
But what if we had to boil it down to one thing only?
As human beings, what is our greatest need?
Here are some answers I’ve heard: world peace, love, safety, education, plenty of food, good health, unity, family, conservation, freedom, comfort, financial security, happiness, etc.
Lots of good stuff, but an elusive task to pick just one.
And the greatest problem is that even if we were to have any or all of these, they would be temporary at best. Limited by time. Confined to this life alone.
What if God could offer that one thing we as humans desperately need, that would extend beyond the limitations of this temporary life?
I often wondered why Scripture devotes so much time to God dealing with our sin, and ultimately displaying His great love for us on the cross.
Once I realized that our sin is our greatest problem, then it became clear what our greatest need is.
Because of our sin (turning away from God), without His forgiveness our relationship with Him is eternally severed. Our greatest need is forgiveness for our sin — salvation for our soul.
And regardless of what we may possess on this earth, nothing but His grace through Jesus Christ will free us, and carry us on to an eternal relationship with Him in the heavenly realms.
And there we’ll never again have a reason to say, “I really need that.”
